Comments
Snow conditions can best be described as variable. Many south facing slopes are down to dirt (which is probably for the best) and the snow that does remain contains unconsolidated snow, ice, melt/freeze crusts, and facets. While the skiing today wasn't awful, the structure of the snowpack is pretty bad in most places. With another period of clear skies ahead of us, I expect that most areas with snow will either develop an almost entirely faceted snowpack or a mix of facets and melt/freeze crust.
Weather wise, skies were clear and an inversion was taking place with temps at the base of the canyon ~30 while the air temp at Alta was 45. There was no wind and with the sun the temperature felt around 60. This was causing some areas to have damp unconsolidated snow while others began to develop firnspiegel on the surface.
