Winds were transporting lots of snow. The snowpack is still shallow. Some deeper snow can be found, but the photo below shows the snow at 9200 feet on an East facing slope. It was 18" deep.
On a small wind loaded terrain feature, I was able to get the top few inches of snow to crack on a 28 degree slope. This told me that with snow coming and more strong winds, we would see avalanches.
Drifting snow obscured my view, but Dave Coyne saw this natural avalanche. Avalanches before the storm are a good clue that more avalanches will happen.
