Comments
Started our tour at 0630 after a freeze the night before. Started to get warm around 9 even in the shadows. Intermittent rockfall occurred during the morning as the sun began to hit more of the couloir. At the summit from around 1200 to 1400 were completely clear skies, no wind, and high temps.
Snow line was around 8600'. The snow was solid and required crampon to penetrate from 9600' feet up. Even at 1400, snow above 11000 ft was ski edge only penetration and slide-for-life conditions existed. Below 11000', the snow quickly transitioned to being wet and loose on the top couple inches and skiing was fast and fun. Down towards the bottom and throughout the couloir, there were large runnels in the snow.
In the past week, there have been large avalanches that effected almost the whole bowl. The largest was a D3 wet slide that ran 2400' length, 1300' vert with a crown face 50' wide and averaging 2' deep with the highest point being 3'. This slide ran down to the ground in some points as shown by the rocks in the snow. It appeared that it may have been triggered by an avalanche coming off the cliff above and entrained almost all the snow in its path. There was also numerous other smaller slides. Debris ranges from microwave to refrigerator size chunks.
