Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
New Snow
Problem #1 Comments
New snow arrived right-side-up. The early heavy snow is well-bonded to the old snow, but decreasing density within the newest storm snow made it prone to sluffing ~15-20cm down in steep terrain. Sluffs ran far and entrained a reasonable amount of snow, D1- if you got knocked over by one.
Comments
Travel from Spruces to Upper Days (Main, Banana, Crystal Palace). Little new snow at the trailhead with increasing accumulation above 8500'. Southerlies were crusty with a thin layer of new low density snow. Due North maintained some depth and progressively increasing hardness that made for good skiing without much scraping. Sluffs were the main hazard of the day. We didn't oberve much evidence of wind-drifting along Reed Benson, and no slabs of concern. 8 am began with warm fog and wet ice crystal precip. Fog was in and out all day with occaisional snow showers but no significant accumulation. More substantial precip was encountered driving down canyon at 1:30 so more is possible by day's end.
