Some overnight graupel was observed along the Alta summer road. I found the greatest danger on ridge lines and previous skin tracks where a slip to the firm snow wouldn't feel great and in alpine terrain could result in a slide for life. The wind kept the snow cool and firm this morning. Where the wind has not scoured and formed sastrugi, pockets of stubborn wind drifts exist.
There is a lot of tracks in the Wasatch and cornices have been approached from all sides. I had to look from the side quite a few times as those tracks lure you to the edge of what has been treated as a well engineered ridge top patio. It's not.. and it is changing quick with the sun high in th sky.
Smooth snow can be found on northerly wind sheltered terrain where the turns were quiet enjoyable. Simply enjoying a breath of fresh air is much needed right now. I would expect any new snow to bond poorly to the current snow surface. South facing low angle slopes are smooth and the melt freeze could turn to nice corn skiing before the temps get too warm tomorrow. I know I'll be back up for some early morning north facing protected powder and well timed southerly exit.
