Weather
Weather Comments
High 40s F at the trailhead before dawn this morning. Increasing clouds throughout the day, overcast by mid-afternoon. Consistent light winds at mid elevation, turning into sustained moderate to strong wind at upper elevations, particularly near the ridgeline.
Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Surface freeze starting around 7200ft that turned completely to mashed potatoes shortly after noon. Below this warm, damp, isothermal feeling snow with post holing for those who dared step off the icy foot pack. Above 7200ft, found a few inches of recrystalized snow atop stout crust up to 8000ft or so. Above 8000ft, snow surface was dense/damp or wind affected up to or beyond boot top, varying underneath this with crust in most places or bottomless facets, particularly near rocks and trees. In some locations at upper elevations, there was also surface wind crust or glassy sun crust.
Red Flags
Red Flags Comments
Clouds, wind, and a generally northwest aspect did nothing to stop the warm snow at mid and low elevations simply due to very warm temps. Saw numerous small wet point releases from yesterday. At the mid and low elevations, it was easy to set off wet sluffs under our skis by noon, with natural rollerballs and pinwheels already in the works. Even with the bit of forecasted snow and cooler temps, I'll be wary of solar aspects as it doesn't look like the cool off will provide for consistent hard freeze at mid and low elevations.
