Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #1 Comments
No red flags observed while traveling up Scottie's Bowl on Thursday evening, however, there were isolated pockets of wind slab on my skin up. Surprisingly, I observed the most hollow sounding wind slab closest to the dense trees on skinner's right of Scottie's. In other words, it was difficult to predict just where the wind slabs were, probably in part due to the shifting winds since last week's storm.
From the top of Scottie's, the riding was fun and fast with several inches on top of a supportable crust. However, the quality deteriorated with each turn down the hill.

Comments
I did not dig any pits, but frequent hand pits showed time and time again that the rain/rime crust formed last Monday is zipping right off the layer of snow beneath it-- what looks like a thin layer of graupel on top of weaker, unconsolidated snow. What's more, the snow on the surface of the crust has clearly undergone some faceting, making skinning on the steeps very slippery and generally a nuisance.
