Comments
The snowpack is strong and solid. Generally just over 5 feet of snow on shaded aspects. The two nearby SNOTEL (Santaquin Meadows and Payson RS) sites are showing 3-4.5 feet of total snow (10-15 inches of SWE) which is very dense.
The MAIN issue is one for the future. We covered 45 miles today, and in EVERY place we looked there was about 3/4 of an inch of very low-density snow on top of a variety of crusts. With warm days and very cold clear nights, this layer is starting to weaken and facet. Low density snow tends to facet more quickly than denser snow. Looking at this snow under a lens, it was mostly stellar dendrites (aka snowflakes) but the arms had small faceted edges growing.
This layer won't be an avalanche problem until it gets a slab of snow on top of it. For now it just makes the snow surface sparkle.
Thanks to Summit Motorsports in Spanish Fork for loaning me a helmet because I left mine in SLC.
