I did a quick afternoon zip up Pofo to see what was happening from low to medium elevations in Mill Creek, since as reported by Gagne et al this zone was treated a bit differently by the storms this week. Low elevation was - as expected - wet, and there was more snow accumulated of course up higher (where I was getting some healthy skin gloppage due to the temp differential). I turned around at about 8800 (well below Porter Pass) and dug a quick little pit. Sure enough, the snowpack is pretty complex, which - as a bit of a simpleton myself - indicates instability to me. Below a few inches of supportable heavy snow was - at this elevation - a thin crust, which I assume was from today or yesterday's warm precip. Below that was pretty solid, cohesive snow down about 18 inches to where the nice slab pulled out really easily, presumably on the colder snow from early in the week. That said, I was getting no whoomphs and was surprised to not see any natural activity off the Pofo slabs or the NW face of Raymond, so I was ok with quick wiggles that passed through the very bottom of a couple of old slide paths that are on the standard Pofo route, but turned about before the final approach to the pass to not tickle the White Dragons that were roaring elsewhere nearby today. I think this zone will heal, but....how quickly? Time will tell.
