Partner and I skinned up Millcreek this afternoon. Snow down by the road was wet and heavy but didn't show many signs of instability, so we decided to venture cautiously up the Mt Aire trail, assessing conditions as we went. Snow seemed reasonably stable for the first half mile, but when we got to the fork to Lamb's, we began noticing some minor sluffing that made us wary of going further.
We dug a quick'n'dirty pit to check conditions. (Apologies for the sloppy job; we didn't intend more than a cursory inspection.) NW aspect @ 6780', 3:15pm. Snow depth 120cm. Pic shows results of our compression test. 1 tap from wrist immediately broke off a clean 10cm slab from the entire column width. At 5 taps from wrist, another 10cm slab broke off. This one didnt propagate beyond the shovel, but its collapse caused ~20cm of soft powder to flow freely from beneath it, leaving the rest of the slab hanging in place. Needless to say, we turned around.
