Comments
Short circuit through lower Grizzly Gulch up Michigan City and then over to Down and Out. Short laps in West Bowl and then out Binx's. Goal was to monitor condition of storm interfaces and bonding to crusts. No significant results or activity noted on tour. Light snowfall composed of mainly rimed stellars in the AM. By noon the clouds had thinned and it seemed like green-housing was imminent. Left the field before any notable changes to snow surface took place. Winds were non-existent and this contributed to the stagnant air feeling quite humid.
Dug profiles on SE aspects in both the Michigan City area and on the flanks of West Bowl. Snow depth in Grizzly was 200cm, the shallowest spot I could find in Silver was 90cm. Interesting to see the grains near the ground there were faceted, yet showed no signs of instability.
Overall it seems like the reports coming in are attributed to new snow and wind. Old wind slabs were firm and a rime crust was noted at and along the hightest ridges. Cornices above Silver Fork Headwall are sizable and not to be trusted. Stability observed was good. Ski quality was very good.
Photos show profile in Michigan City and rising clouds in Silver Fork.
