Out testing radios for the CROWBAR and scouting. Patrick Strong and I dug this pit about 50 vertical feet below the summit around 4 pm.
Lots of tracks all over this face.
Dug pit to ground (160 cm). Tapped a shovel compression test and extended column test to 30 without fail. When we put the shovel behind the column and pried, we got both columns to fail on the top of the 4F weak layer 90 cm above the ground. The column from the compression test failed with a bit of energy, it popped out. The extended column test failed with a small slump/no energy but the failure propagated across the entire column.
Failure on 90 cm above ground is the same weak layer Greg Davis identified 11 days ago. Some settling of the snowpack since then.
The strongest layer in the snow pack is the bottom 10 cm right above ground.
