Comments
Traveled in the Nebo area on Saturday. Our party dug a few pits on East- and Northeast-facing slopes at ~9500 ft. Snowpack depth was between 90 and 100 centimeters at this elevation. Didn't take the time to put a full profile together, but ECTs yielded some troubling results, with failures occuring on basal facets and a MF crust ~30cm deep. These results were enough to make us reconsider our objective and stick to more south-facing slopes, which skied well with about 10 inches of low-density fluff on top. Given the shallow snowpack and poor structure, I'll be giving the snow some time to strengthen before I step out into more high-consequence terrain in this zone. Still a very early season snowpack structure in this part of the range.
