I out this afternoon and found medium density snow on-top of light density snow. The south side of the ridges were wind loaded while the north side has significant cornice growth but no wind loading immediately below the cornices. The steep treed north skied well while snowmobiling required careful consideration to minimize the number of times getting stuck. I kicked several cornices and found very good cohesion within the loaded snow. One of the cornices I kicked failed about 25 feet wide before breaking up. When it collapsed it was very slow to roll off it's anchor. Once it rolled off it managed to damage some branches on a 15 foot fir just below. In wind sheltered areas the snow continues to be very safe. In areas where prevalent south west wind loading is typical, I did not see much loading. That said with the upside down soft slab on top of the light density snow I wasn't getting into any open marginally loaded terrain.
