Weather Comments
We clearly have not been praying hard enough for Less Wind! Though today wasn't bad, and the snow hasn't been as wrecked as it could be with as much wind as we've had over the last few days.
Comments
Since we had good luck with east facing yesterday when there were some other south facing avalanches happening, we started out with e facing and subsequently stayed in mostly sheltered areas. However, we skinned/skied Doug's Drop, which is a decent step up from the Meadow chutes, partly because - I'll admit -we were encouraged by the fact that people had slayed the nearby Meadow's El Rollo and even Ricardo's, which I tend to avoid. A couple of quick hand pits on climb indicated that it was cohesive without being much of a slab, and the pieces that came off were pretty sticky to the layers below, which gave us the confidence in a bit more exposed terrain. Even at the top there didn't seem to be too much wind loading or slab development. Same deal for Main Days when we got over there. We did avoid SE facing ribs that might have seen some cross-loading based on info gleaned from Saturday's action.
Indeed, it's a bit odd to suddenly need to be wary of south aspects when we've spent the last 6 weeks kind of relying on - and tolerating - south faces for our safe skiing, and we people aren't that good at quick adaptations to fundamental change.
It started snowing pretty abruptly around 3pm and was coming down surprisingly hard, and there was actually almost instantaneous sluffing on steep slopes, -both natural and skier-"triggered" - which leads me to believe that there will be at least "significant sluffs" (when do they become avalanches?) tomorrow on steeper slopes (> maybe 36 degrees?) with the incoming snow.
