Our crew skied Upper Show Off and the Funnel today on a stellar day in the La Sals. Sunny skies and very light winds. We dug our pit on a west (260 degree) aspect near the top of Show Off at 11,230 ft. Slope was 32 degrees and pit was 125 cm deep. Our ECT produced no results, and we had only a very minor failure at 98 cm during our shovel shear test. The new snow interface for both the Christmas storm and last weekend's snow event appeared relatively strong at our aspect and elevation. We did have two very small collapses (less than 3 meter radius) while skinning up trees near the southern edge of the Funnel.
Our most significant observation was the new natural slide covering the upper 2/3 of Tele Gold, across the basin. See the separate avalanche report for photo and details.
Lower elevation south and west slopes were becoming heavy by the end of the day, and I anticipate a light sun crust with be present in those locations tomorrow. You might want to bring your skin wax and a scraper if you plan to ski many different aspects and elevations.
