New Snow
We made it out for a few hours today and were pleasantly surprised by the 12-14" of new powder we found. Things were a little less sketchy today on boards, but many bombs are still hidden and waiting to explode sleds. We talked to 2 dudes in the parking lot who had blown up their A-arms. I found a hidden landmine that luckily didn't damage my sled, but ejected me into the handlebars. Be careful out there. Conditions are improving, but still not great for the motorized folks. We were pretty nervous about conditions today before we even left home, so we stayed on super mellow terrain and preferred meadow skipping to bigger options. Although we didn't observe any avalanches, we still were aware of the dangers out there. One carve on a steeper roller produced cracking and shifting of the snow. Luckily it wasn't steep enough to run. The wind was still consistent at higher elevations and the snow was definitely wind affected, dense, and fast. We both dug pits today. My pit was on an East-Southeast aspect at about 8500' with a slope angle of about 28 degrees. I found just over 3 feet of nice settled snow. My compression test had failures at CT12 and CT14 both failing on the new/old snow interface about 14" down. It appeared to be on a thin sun crust with some near surface facets on top. I also did an extended coulumn test and had a failure at ECTN14 with no propogation. The compression tests were coming out quite clean with Q1 shearing. Eric dug his pit on a Southeast slope also at 8500' in elevation with a slope angle of 24 degrees with about 26" total snow. He had very different results than I had. He had failures on his compression test at CT1 and CT4 (YIKES!) that popped out very clean. He found a much more pronounced ice crust than I did at just slightly different aspects. His Extended Column Test failed and propogated at ECTP9. Neither of us found any of the old October facets (probably due to the fact that we were on East and South slopes that probably bared off). With these results, we were pretty happy that we decided to play on the bunny hill today. We had a fantastic day and felt pretty good about making it home safe.
