Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #1 Comments
On 10Dec2019 my partner Dillon and I summited Mt Tuk via the north ridge and descended off the north face a little to the east down the ridge line. On our bootpack up I noted consolidated wind drifted snow on the N face possibly creating a solid wind slab. Along the E ridge we noticed major wind drift ripples on southern and northern aspects, including heavy cross wind loading. Around 11,800ft I noticed a shift in snow conditions, especially in shaded areas where the snow felt less wind loaded and in general good snow for making turns. If the summit is in your cross hairs, be weary of variable snow conditions and watch out for terrain traps, especially this early in the season where you could slide across hidden rocks.
