Comments
Today's tour was out to the Deseret Peak Wilderness to ski the three couloirs surrounding the peak. Currently there is no snow until 1.75 miles past the gate. There was about 10 CM of settled powder on the east facing terrain and about 15 CM of settled powder on the north facing terrain. There was quite a bit of graupel near the surface in all of the couloirs. Despite the graupel we did not have any sluffing. The sun came out for a brief moment, but it wasn't enough to heat up any of the snow above 9K. The dense cloud cover kept all aspects above 9k cold and dry. However, we left around 1pm so I am not sure whether the clouds hung around.
We dug one pit on an east facing aspect at 9.5K. I am not sure on the total snow depth because the snow was deeper than our 240 CM probes. The snow was very consolidated and we had no results on ECT. We did a lot of pole poking on N and E aspects with no signs of poor structure. The east facing terrain has very large hanging cornices. Temple couloir had a fresh wind slab near the top, but a refrigerator sized cornice drop was not enough to move it. Neither of the twin north couloirs had any evidence of recent wind loading. Overall the conditions in that area appeared to be very stable with very well behaved snow.
