I was out yesterday and didn't see anything very interesting, certainly no avalanches or moving snow. I had noted the firm base below the new snow, but on north and east everything was staying in place. I expected some sluffing of the dry loose snow, despite the wind loading the north side, I didn't think much as I dropped into two dogs. I did a hard ski cut along the top edge of the rocks, then dropped in to skiers right fall line. On my third or fourth turn I noticed the suface cracking all around me. I headed for my island of safety to the trees on skiers right and the slid hit me full on. I did a hip check and braced against the snow and fighting to get back to my feet..... which I did as I arrived at my island of safety. From the bottom I watched 6 other skiers skiers ski upper days without incident. I then headed toward main days via the normal east ridge trail. Just above where the trail hit the ridge there is a nice line off the shoulder into Main Days. It was less steep than two dogs, but I knew it had potential to go after my first run. I put in a few good ski cuts and the began a left to right trending descent...again on my 3 or 4 turn the surface crumpled around me and I again made it out of the moving snow to an island of safety. These slides were manageable this afternoon, in the terrain I was in, but just.
Comments
I admit I was a bit caught off guard on the first one by the size of the slab, amounts of snow were greater than forecasted. I was also a bit suprised by the conectivity of the slabs. It was hard to tell exactly how big these slides were as visibility made it difficult to see crown lines, but I woud guess 6-8" deep and 100 feet across. I was also a bit suprised there was not movement on my ski cut, but on my 3 turn. They were quite fast running as well.
