Comments
Overcast sky, with bursts of graupel and wind (out of the SW) during the morning hours. The wind calmed down mid-morning, before picking up again, but fluctuated with bursts of wind followed by periods of snow and graupel into the afternoon. However, the wind was short lived each time where we were, and never impacted the terrain covered.
Saturated snow down low, but as you gained elevation things greatly improved with colder temps and more graupel. Near 8500' the interface became less saturated.
Founds 20-30cm of new snow and graupel which was well bonded on SE, E and NE aspects. The steeper E and NE runs sloughed slightly, most likely due to the graupel, but never entrained or packed a punch. Additionally in the terrain covered there was minimal wind effect and slab development. The stability, snow, and lack of wind effect was a pleasant surprise as the winds were ripping early this morning at our cabin.
In a few locations I could still find some weakness mid-snowpack. However they were just over a meter deep and without a slab on top. Over time, and with this eventual cool down, I'm hoping they will become less of an issue.
In the avalanche terrain covered today, the hazard was Moderate. Perhaps in heavier wind loaded terrain it was more spicy. Tomorrow, most likely Considerable above 9500' and Moderate elsewhere unless this storm starts to ramp up again.
