Comments
Travel was up Thomas Fork of Neff's Canyon. An unreasonably nice day to be in the mountains, with no wind, clear skies, and temps in the low 30s. While thinner than the upper Cottonwoods, the snowpack seems like it is mostly stable in this area. No recent activity other than some small wet sluffs on solars. All of the mid-pack weak layers seem to be well on their way to healing. Skiing on wind and sun sheltered terrain is still excellent.
Dug a pit at 8700' at the bottom of the apron below Hobbs Chute. NE aspect and 30 deg slope angle. Total snowpack depth was approx 160cm. ECTX and CTN. Digging down all the way to the base of the snowpack revealed a layer of rounding, but still loose-grained facets. This area is a scree/boulder field, so it's hard to say if this is a continuous widespread layer or if it is pockety. Above that, a well bonded 2F/1F slab (slightly inverted - a little stronger up top, but still well bonded throughout), with the last 15cm being fist hard settled snow from the two storms last week. The storm on Monday looks to have been the last significant load in this area, with the Thursday storm basically being a non-event. In the world of totally non-scientific stability tests, prying on the back of the column with moderate force produced a clean shear on the new/old snow interface 15cm down, and really wrenching on it produced a dirty break about 70cm down on a subtle density change.
Second quick pit on the ridge to looker's left of point 9773. 9700' W facing. 130cm total depth. ECTN26, just a little movement on the new/old snow interface 15cm down. Disintegrating melt-freeze crust 55cm down. Thin layer of rounding facets down at the ground.
I would say most terrain in this area has a Low danger right now. The facets down in the basement, while on their way to healing, are still a little spooky, and enough to keep me on my toes in the periphery of the central Wasatch. There is probably an outside chance that you could get really unlucky and trigger something breaking all the way down to the ground on a thin spot in rocky, unsupported terrain.
