Poor Snowpack Structure
Red Flags Comments
There is a LOT of junk in the trunk of the snow pack around ~8600 feet on SE facing slopes. Thick crusts and facets then the latest storms. Collapsing seems more prevalent in bushy, scrubby terrain.
Comments
This pit was 8700ft, SE facing on a 30° slope. HS was 120. Crusts are clearly visible behind the probe. Of note; this ECT failed 60cm down, just like the pit I dug a few days ago on a NE aspect at 9100ft. Todays pit failed easier and with more energy. Main failure was above the crust but there were also fractures underneath the crust. There were even weaker layers underneath the main, thickest crust that could potentially step down even further.
