Comments
I got out and checked out some of the snowpack late afternoon by way of Soapstone to the top of Wolf Creek Pass. In sheltered areas over 9K there is 20-30 cm of snow. There is a hard melt-freeze or rain crust in the middle with large facets below. I didn't have a card with me, but I'd guess at least 4mm. So if I think about about north facing slopes up high in ski terrain, I can imagine a sugarly layer below a hard layer with some faceted snow above crossing most of the sheltered portions of the slopes.
The second picture is from just a few days ago about 8K on the western front showing large surface hoar growing in sheltered flat terrain.
