Snow Characteristics Comments

Snow blankets upper elevation slopes facing all directions, but it's fairly shallow (only one to two feet above 8200'). Early season conditions exist and hitting rocks or deadfall is a significant hazard.

The snow is moderately supportable, more so on upper elevation slopes where sunny slopes are crusty and wind exposed slopes are scoured. I found some pockets of nice re-crystallized powder in sheltered terrain, with sun and wind crusts, and isolated wind slabs up high.

Problem #1 Comments

Isolated wind slab avalanches up to about 1' deep are unlikely but possible in very steep drifted upper elevation terrain.
