Started at Alta with the intent of skiing Cardiac in the upper drainage of Cardiff, by the time I got to LSB the visibility was going down hill rapidly. Skied down LSB NE facing and was getting some decent size surface sluffing on my way down, with it being almost a white out in the upper drainage decided to head down canyon in search of less wind and more visibility. Noted some natural sluffing off the Ivory Rock Slabs and the visibility was still poor, at that point. Continued down canyon until I got down near the Catchers Mit and headed up the East Face of Kessler, noted some large fresh sluffs on the W facing off the Reed and Benson ridge line that left some good sized debris piles in the run out of the chutes. Once I got in the choke heading up Kessler it was obvious that it had avalanched probably during the high PI rates during yesterdays storm. It looked to be quite a large avalanche with the debris running over 1200ft but luckily the debris was soft and covered by 5 of 6 inches of new snow. Had the same sort of surface sluffing on my way down but it was just the surface snow and not packing much of a punch. Seemed like the wind and the snow amounts were increasing on my exit around 4:30. Didn't experience any cracking or collapsing and did not travel through any wind affected snow in my travels. But that might be a different story at higher elevations and west facing terrain.
Photos: debris from yesterdays avalanche on Kessler, wind getting down lower in the drainage in the PM, sluffing caused by cornice release, Still tough breaking trail.
Thinking mostly moderate unless the wind get out of control tonight.
