Light snow strong winds today. Had to lean into the wind to keep my feet a couple of times. Several inches of graupel on snow which is wet and firm at low elevation or on a frozen crust up higher. Skinned to just above the weather station.
Dug a pit at 8k. North facing. The top 25 cm sheared off easily with the back cut. Another weak layer 20 cm below that failed at ECT 13 with no propagation. This layer was low density snow from the prior storm. New snow 45 cm depth. The total depth was greater than 225 cm. The 12-16-16 raincrust was 95 cm from the surface. Didn't dig that deep.
Ignore photos.
Large stiff wind pillows with weak underlying snow were widespread. The kind that break above or behind you. No collapsing or cracking were noted. No natural activity was seen. The new snow was very dense and wasn't being blown around by wind. The surface graupel was moving with the wind. It started snowing hard at about 3:30 pm.
High danger again tomorrow especially with new snow and wind.
