I triggered all sorts of localized cracking.... new snow, up to a foot deep

This indicates that the new snow is becoming cohesive enough to act as a slab.

not enough base! facet layer on the ground capped by a melt/freeze crust and less than 10 cms thick, and it only exists on north facing slopes

Periods of heavy snow and strong winds certainly helping to fill in the terrain.
