Snow Characteristics Comments

Surprisingly good, soft, dense, near-surface faceted snow on the straight north facing slopes in wind sheltered areas. You can still find places that are not completely tracked up, such as the north-facing headwall of Silver Fork with surprisingly few tracks. But all the other aspects and elevations are quite character-building with various kinds of melt-freeze crusts on all the aspects that got even a little sun. Boy, do we need more snow.

The urban backcountry of Little Cottonwood Canyon. The snow has been well-loved since the last storm.

These are what I call embossed tracks. First, the skier or boarder made the track, second, the wind and/or sun removed the snow. Where the track was compacted, it now sticks up above the snow surface instead of being a depression in the snow surface.

Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Wet Snow
Problem #1 Comments

The aspects getting a lot of sun (SE, S, SW and W) seemed to be wetter and more punchy than I found them a couple days ago. There certainly has been lots of surface melting and some water percolating through the entire snowpack but there just doesn't seem to be any weak layers or crusts that are getting saturated enough to produce wet slabs. There was enough wind today to keep the snow surface cooler, so there seemed to be little threat of wet, loose activity either.

Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments

The wind was pretty blustery today and was definitely moving around some snow, but with the old, worn out snow surface, there was not much snow available to transport. With so much very weak, near-surface faceted snow on the northerly aspects, it doesn't take much wind moving around some snow to make some fresh wind slabs on top of the surface facets. It's very pockety but worth mentioning on the advisory tomorrow.
