No wind on this short dusk-patrol tour below ridgeline, and a trace of stellar snow sat undisturbed.
Comments

Short tour, short ob. Just a couple notes that might interest skiers:

  • Melt freeze crust up to 2 cm thick was easily avoided by choosing aspect or canopy thickness. South through SE was loud and crunchy (with trace of large stellars on top), but the skiing was silent as aspect rolled east through NE, and even notably quieter on SE aspects while passing to the north of large conifers.
  • Most recent wind did not affect terrain below ridgeline in my location.
  • Evidence of previous wind events evident below surface powder: Especially but not exclusively on subridges, could feel hardened slab below the soft snow. Made for uptrack that was slippery and down track with decided "bottom" in places.
  • Otherwise uninteresting pit on mid elevation, typically-protected SE did show how hard and of what variable depth the older wind slab was: This difficult-to-shovel layer rang from 8 cm to 35 cm across the pit wall.
