Snow Characteristics Comments
Still good, dry graupel-laden snow on upper elevation, northerly facing slopes, but settling by the day. Do hit bottom once and a while, but I really can't complain. Most other aspects - frozen early, transitioning to breakable and then slushy shortly after the sun hit. Still some dry snow on upper elevation northerly at 2:30 this afternoon. Expect there to still be just a bit of dry snow left for one more day, Saturday, after another cool night with clear skies - though limited to high, steeper north facing.
Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Wet Snow
Problem #1 Comments
Low danger earlier, increasing slightly as the snow heats. It will be possible to trigger small damp sluffs as the snow heats, an issue only in more radical terrain, where you could be taken over cliffs, rammed into trees or rocks, or go for a long ride. Heating first on easterly, then south, west and northerly.
Comments
For tomorrow Saturday, expect icy conditions early, with slide for life potential on very steep slopes. Most slopes will soften nicely by mid day. Ax, crampons, ski crampons, whippets, etc could be useful for early starts in steep terrain. Skin wax and a scraper may also be useful if you transition from wet snow to dry snow. Photos: another beautiful day; tracks left by people taking advantage of the dry powder.
