Snow Characteristics Comments

Crusty snow was the rule of the day. At times the crust was soft enough so that you would sort of ski through it without much problem.

Red Flags
Red Flags
Poor Snowpack Structure
Red Flags Comments
Checked poor snowpack structure largely for thin snowpack areas. In a quick east facing pit at 8000 feet snow was only 2.5 feet deep and consisted of large grain facets below a slab. At higher elevations, snow was twice as deep and the old facets were far stronger/rounded.

Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #1 Comments

Generally low danger, particularly in deeper snowpack areas. In thin areas, structure is still poor.

Comments

Generally quite strong snow with no ECT result. After the ECT, pried on the block pretty well - it eventually came out but with a good deal of effort. The entire block was quite cohesive.

Surface hoar noted in valley bottoms.
