Comments
We rode in the Tony Grove/ Hunters Cave (Groiner Bowl) area today and expected the worst but were surprised by the great snow even after the strong winds over the past couple of days. You could barely tell that the wind had even blown in most areas other than the highest ridges which were cover in wind eroded snow (strastugi). With the exception of a few thin wind affected areas away from the ridgelines, we found great turning on northeast through southeast aspects between 9600 and 9000 feet elevation. Areas away from ridgelines retained great settled powder that still produced great face shots on the sled and the board.
We took a pretty good look around the area and did not notice any new avalanche activity in the Tony Grove area. We had a few pockets of wind slab break out on us while riding but most slopes were under 34 degrees and nothing moved more than 5 feet or so. The 1-2 inch thick slabs were different places than you would expect and the most surprising was a 20 foot wide slab on an east facing slope where you would have expected it to be completely scoured of soft snow.
