Snow Characteristics Comments
Surface hoar is starting to develop on the top 2 cm but otherwise, the snow structure on this west facing slope is much better and more stable than I've seen on other NW-N-NE-E facing aspects in the last week. Still the rain/rime crust from 12/23 a few inches down which is breakable and makes for unpleasant skiing.

Cracking
Red Flags Comments
Minor, localized cracking 1-2' from the ski, no propagating, more of the rime crust simply breaking.

Comments
I abandoned the ECT at 20 hits after I had compressed all the surface snow and pushed the shovel all the way down to the Pen/Knife hard layer 22 cm above the ground with no movement in the column.
