Main thing of note today was the unexpected winds that were blowing in the moderate category and increasing throughout the day. Walk by West Monitor this morning on my way to ski South monitor, looked into the bowl and it was not wind affected. After skiing a few runs in South Monitor decided to go to Wills Hill because South Monitor was getting wind loaded and wind damaged. Walking back over West Monitor, started to pop out new wind slabs remotely off the top of the ridge. These freshly formed wind slabs were super sensitive and would release from a fair distance away . By the time of our exit both bowls were pretty wind hammered. Photos, the two wind slabs remotely triggered, a fairly large one off the peak, and a smaller one in the skiers left corner pocket. three photos of each
Photos, Wind blowing in South Monitor, Wind damage increasing as the day progressed, more rime.
Really have become a believer in knowing what the new snow load is landing on early on in the season. Already knew the skier left side in South Monitor had a melt freeze crust and dirt before the storm, so it was kind of a no brainer to ski this aspect after the storm.
