Snow Characteristics Comments

About a foot of settled powder out of the last two storms. The new snow was somewhat dense and it took a little slope angle to get going. There was a density inversion in the storm snow but it was subtle. Riding and trail breaking should be easier tomorrow as the snow settles. Below 8000ft., west facing slopes were damp by the end of the day.

Comments

Traveled from 6800-9000 ft., north half of the compass, slope angles to 32 degrees. No signs of instability today but pretty much stuck to sheltered, low angle slopes. Where we were there still was not enough water weight to tip the scale on the buried weak faceted snow. The storms this month have slowly been adding a little weight to the snow pack at a time. Although we have seen natural avalanche cycles the small increases in weight with each storm has allowed to snow pack to gradually adjust to any new load without a lot of sudden stress. Snow pack structure continues to be poor but overall is strengthening. Wind loaded and steep, shallow areas should be considered suspect.
