Snow Characteristics Comments

Mostly wet damp snow and melting at 8.5k and above, but at the highest elevation northern aspects (NE-N-NW) above 9k some near surface faceting and surface hoar developed overnight. I expect that'll break down and round out in the coming days. I could almost watch it happening in spots where the sun would begin to hit it.

Comments

Starting to see more frozen ground on the walk up in elevation(pic1). On northern aspects(NW-N-NE) as low as 7.8k the ground was frozen still on the way down at 14:00. Snow line was at about 8.5k, and highest snow totals I saw in the Ben Lomond saddle amounted to 3 inches. Snow was mostly damp and melting, but from about 9k and up there was some minor near surface faceting and surface hoar on NW-N-NE aspects from overnight on top of damp snow to the ground(pic2). On Willard Peak's east face the snow was quickly melting(pic3), but on the north face of Ben Lomond(pic4) the melt rate was slower, but still appeared to be getting warmer. The view of Mt. Ogden's north face(pic5) showed similar looking results from afar to what I was seeing on Ben Lomond.
