Comments
We witnessed frequent collapsing and cracking on our tour today, and saw numerous natural avalanches on slopes of 35-40 degrees at 9,000-10,000 ft. The crowns appeared to be 18-24" deep; likely the new snow load failing on facets. I have been skiing the area where theses avalanches occurred for almost 15 years and have never seen such widespread natural avalanche activity. On one ridge (the first 3 pictures) there was 800-1,000 yards of nearly continuous avalanche crown. I another area there was approximately 200-300 yards of crown. It was difficult to know if all of the crown was connected as much of it was in dense trees. The pictures do not do justice to the magnitude of the avalanche activity we witnessed.
