Very nice day to be out. No wind, cool enough that snow stayed in good shape on aspects other than south.

Snow Characteristics Comments

Good skiing conditions. The little bit of snow from last week made a big difference in skiing quality. Density changes and weak crusts were not noticeable while skiing. We mostly skied west facing and it stayed cool enough.

Red Flags Comments
Cracking was variable. Some lower elevation places (<9000') that got sun had a supportable crust while in slightly more shady spots had a weak crust that would crack under your weight. Below the new snow, facets pour out of the snowpit wall.

Problem #1 Comments

The snow pack is mostly facets but those in the upper portions (~15cms down) of the snowpack were the weakest. Facets seemed to gain a little strength down to the rain crusts from December. This will be problematic if it snows next week.

Comments

Example of localized cracking in the photo below.

In the video, the density change was enough to support snow a little, but it was all very weak and you could easily push your hand into the facets.
