Weather Comments
The morning was overcast and very windy. Strong winds from the west blew all day, and I observed heavy snow transport. Overcast skies eventually gave way to few clouds, and the afternoon was much more pleasant than the morning.

Snow Characteristics Comments

The sun has finally got to south and southwest aspects, and they have a melt-freeze crust on top. Sheltered west is still good, but even the slightest aspect change towards the south, and you can feel the snow change instantly. The best turns of the day were on an east aspect below treeline, where I found cold, dry powder unaffected by the wind.

Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Persistent Weak Layer
Problem #1 Comments

First, the good - All slopes below treeline have low danger, including the polars, which still hold excellent snow. We have not had a single report of a slab over the weak facets anywhere below treeline. Many slopes (solars) offer low danger, allowing you to walk far and high during the current period of sunny high pressure. Cold, dry powder still exists near treeline; it's just a little harder to find thanks to recent winds.

The not so good - Above treeline northerlies remain our biggest area of concern. Long-time La Sal skiers will be used to this. It is rare that we ever enter big alpine terrain this time of year. Hard slabs from previous drifting sit on top of several weak layers of facets. Heavy drifting today continues to put pressure on these weak layers.

The profile below is from an east aspect, where I enjoyed great turns below treeline.

Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments

Unfortunately, winds from the west blew strongly today and drifted large amounts of snow. Sensitive drifts will be found near and above treeline on Thursday. Especially on north through east-facing slopes. The photo below is the north face of Mount Mellenthin.

Comments

The last storm really improved skiing and riding conditions, and good powder turns can still be found out there. Overall coverage remains thin. Below are a couple of scenic shots to show snow cover.

This is the north face of Tomasaki and the Deep Creek drainage.

The southeast face of Mann's Peak, showing better coverage than most northerlies.
