Comments
I spent some time exploring Swens Canyon today and thought I would submit some casual observations.
Any aspect I traveled across today that was exposed had abundant surface hoar and/or a thin sun crust. I’ve attached some pictures of the upper portion of the snowpack (North/8700ft). There is about 20cm of light snow sitting on top of the same thin punchy crust that was present following the storm last week. The flats had been completely sun affected and southern facing terrain has been burned to the ground.
I skinned up logging roads to find some sheltered snow. Continuing up the draw I was in to the northern facing head of the bowl and I did find some dense soft snow but the coverage remained light where most logging stumps were still exposed throughout the terrain. With the warm weather the trees have dropped all of their snow and the formation of tree wells was widespread.
For better and worse there doesn’t look to be any significant snowfall in the future. I’d imagine any significant loading on the current snowpack would be problematic in steeper terrain.
