Description
Avalanche conditions are generally fairly safe in the springtime. That doesn't mean that you stop paying attention though. Here are some typical things to consider.
CORNICE FALLS
Large cornices along the ridgelines that formed over the winter are starting to fall. During warm weather, anticipate these things to be unstable
- Don't monkey around on top of cornices and avoid being below them as well.
WET AVALANCHES
When the snow becomes really wet, slushy and sloppy, it is becoming unstable. Avalanches can release naturally and you can also initiate avalanches when the snow gets really wet and slushy.
- Avoid really steep terrain when the snow becomes wet, sloppy and unsupportable.
