Forecast for the Abajos Area Mountains
Friday morning, January 16, 2026
Human triggered avalanches remain possible on steep, wind drifted, north and easterly facing slopes at upper elevations. In these areas, slabs of wind drifted snow sit on top of weak, sugary, faceted snow creating a potentially unstable situation. Although becoming increasingly unlikely, all it takes is finding the right spot. The overall thin conditions make these areas far and few between, but slopes that have enough to ride, are the same slopes that have enough snow to slide.
Minimize your risk by avoiding slopes that have smooth rounded deposits of wind drifted snow or that sound or feel hollow underneath. Avoid terrain that has steep convexities, or areas of rocky, more radical terrain. You can avoid the problem altogether by avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees.
