Our Week in Review highlights significant snowfall, weather, and avalanche events of the previous week. (Review the archived forecasts for the Salt Lake mountains.)
The danger roses for the Salt Lake mountains from Friday, February 19 through Thursday, February 25:
Summary: The past seven days were remarkably quiet with only a few backcountry avalanches reported. Two small storms - (1) Fri/Sat with 3-10" and (2) Wednesday with 1-5" helped freshen the snow surface. Strong winds from the west/northwest early in the period - especially at the upper elevations.
Friday, February 19: 1-3" new storm snow and strong winds out of the west/southwest. A thin rime crust underneath the storm snow was noted on many aspects facing west, No backcountry avalanches reported.
Saturday, February 20: West/northwest winds relax, but are still strong at the upper-most elevations, with averages in the 30's and gusts in the 50's mph. Another 1-3" of snow, containing some graupel in locations. No backcountry avalanches reported.
Sunday, February 21: We squeak out a few snow showers early in the morning, before clearing skies. Storm totals since Friday are 3-10" in the Salt Lake mountains and along the Park City ridgeline. The only avalanche reported from the backcountry was from a snow safety team along the Park City ridgeline which was remotely-triggered from 150' away, failing in old, faceted snow 2' above the ground. This was on an East aspect at 9,500'
Monday, February 22: Clear skies and warming temperatures, with some minor wet-loose avalanche activity on solar aspects. Strong winds from the northwest persist at the upper-most elevations, with gusts in the 70's mph. The only backcountry avalanche was on Pink Pine Ridge. This involved new snow and was 18" deep and 20' wide.
Tuesday, February 23: Partly-cloudy skies with relaxing winds. No backcountry avalanches are reported.
Wednesday, February 24: A small storm moves in and delivers 1-5" of low-density snow. No backcountry avalanches are reported.
Thursday, February 25: Clear skies with light winds. No backcountry avalanches are reported.
