Meteorological Technician - Avalanche Specialist, GS-1341-08
The UWC National Forest Utah Avalanche Center intends to fill up to three (3) Meteorological
Technician - Avalanche Specialist GS-1341-08, seasonal 1039 positions for the 2026-27 winter
season. The vacancy is open on USAJOBS from July 1 through July 14, 2026.

THE POSITION
These positions are supervised by the Avalanche Center Director. Avalanche Specialists work in
both field and office settings to independently issue daily Avalanche Forecasts for multiple zones
across Utah. Work begins in late October and ends in late April.

THE UINTA-WASATCH-CACHE NATIONAL FOREST
The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest spans approximately 2.2 million acres across northern
Utah and southwestern Wyoming. With elevations ranging from valley floors to snowcapped
peaks, the Forest boasts diverse ecosystems, dense alpine forests, over 1,000 high mountain
lakes, and the headwaters of major rivers such as the Bear, Weber, and Provo. Its dramatic
landscapes, extensive wilderness areas—including the High Uintas Wilderness—and rich natural
resources make it a cornerstone of the central Rockies.
The Forest attracts millions of visitors each year for year-round recreation, including hiking,
mountain biking, backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, climbing, and horseback riding. It is
home to premier ski areas, scenic byways, and a variety of developed and remote recreation
opportunities. A dedicated team of permanent and seasonal employees work across multiple
ranger districts to steward and protect this iconic public land.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION
Northern Utah is home to a mix of vibrant communities, including Salt Lake City, Ogden, Logan,
Kamas, and many other small communities. The region is known for its stunning mountain
scenery, four-season climate, and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Clear blue skies
are common, with summer temperatures typically in the 80s and 90s, and winters bringing crisp
air, with highs in the 20s to 40s, and generous snowfall—ideal for winter sports.
The area features a wide range of dining, shopping, cultural, and entertainment options, along
with excellent schools and healthcare facilities, including major hospitals and specialized medical
centers. Expanded services and amenities are easily accessible throughout the Wasatch Front
and surrounding communities.
THE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER (UAC)
The Utah Avalanche Center (UAC) is a collaborative partnership between the U.S. Forest Service
UAC and the nonprofit UAC dedicated to reducing avalanche fatalities and injuries through
forecasting, education, and outreach. The UAC provides daily avalanche forecasts, incident
reports, and safety resources for eight regions across Utah. It also offers avalanche education
programs, public outreach, and professional training. By blending scientific expertise with
community involvement, the UAC plays a vital role in keeping Utah’s winter recreation
community informed and safe.
