The avalanche danger remains CONSIDERABLE today. Human triggered avalanches are likely on steep slopes. People without expert level avalanche skills should avoid travel in the backcountry today. The avalanche conditions will remain dangerous as the next pieces of the storm move through.

HUNTINGTON CANYON IS CURRENTLY CLOSED BUT SHOULD REOPEN THIS MORNING AS HIGHWAY CREWS FINISH CLEARING AVALANCHE DEBRIS FROM THE ROAD.

I'll be covering a bunch of topics including "Persistent Weak Layer Formation" which is about how these weak layers form and how to manage them once they're buried. After a natural avalanche closed the road in Huntington Canyon on Monday, UDOT snow safety brought down more with explosives that also crossed the road leaving healthy sized piles of debris. LINK TO VIDEO OF AVALANCHE REDUCTION WITH EXPLOSIVES.

There was also a natural avalanche reported that released sometime Tuesday morning near Electric Lake. It was fairly deep and may have broke on a surface hoar layer which caused another sizable avalanche in that area last Friday.

More snow is expected today, tonight and Thursday and we may see another foot in the higher terrain. West southwest wind is going to remain moderate to strong today and then slow on Thursday. Temperatures will be in the upper teens and low 20s.
