Avalanche Advisory
Advisory: Skyline Area Mountains Issued by Brett Kobernik for Wednesday - January 4, 2017 - 6:56am
bottom line

The avalanche danger will be increasing as a significant winter storm rolls through today and Thursday. The danger is MODERATE and will increase once more snow falls. Avoid steep slopes during periods of heavy snowfall and strong wind.

current conditions

A trace to a couple of inches of snow fell overnight. Temperatures have crept up a few degrees and most stations are reading in the low to mid 20s. Southwest wind has bumped up in speed a bit also and is blowing in the moderate speed category.

There is a layer of weak snow which formed on the snow surface between December 26th and January 2nd. It is still unknown if it will cause issues as we add more snow on top of it but it is definitely something to be aware of.

weather

We'll see snow today increasing after noon, and lasting through Thursday. Weather models are advertising quite a bit of water and 12 to 20 inches seems likely for snow totals. Temperatures will be mild today and then a cold front moves through Thursday. Wind will be moderate to strong from the west southwest then switch northwest tomorrow with the cold front passage.
