bottom line

INCREASING AVALANCHE DANGER TODAY. There is a HIGH avalanche danger on the north through east facing steep slopes along the higher ridges. Natural avalanches are anticipated due to wind blown snow. To stay out of avalanches, avoid the higher terrain today.

An AVALANCHE WARNING has been issued for the Manti-Skyline for today. Strong wind and drifting snow is creating dangerous conditions in the higher elevations. Avoid being on or below steep wind loaded slopes today.

current conditions

We've picked up about 6 inches of dense snow overnight. The snow level is somewhere between 7000 and 8000 feet. The wind has been strong but currently looks like it has slowed a bit. Ridgetop temperatures are around 30.

The biggest concern today is fresh wind drifted snow. The wind is going to continue all day and increase in speed during the snowfall. This will produce large drifts that may release naturally as they are forming. It is likely that a person could trigger these today.

We'll see continued strong southwest wind today along with snow. Wind will shift to the northwest and decrease in speed with a cold front moving through late in the day. We might pick up another 6 inches of snow during the day and perhaps a few more tonight. Temperatures will continue to decrease to around 20 late this afternoon. The storm moves out on Saturday with some potential clearing late in the day. High temperatures will be in the single digits and we'll have light to moderate northwest wind. Sunday looks clear with high temperatures in the teens.
