With the rain early Tuesday, days and nights of cloud cover, and no overnight refreeze from the weather stations, I was curious as to whether faceted snow was still present even on high north aspects. Alta has reopened for uphill traffic, so we went up Collins gulch and dug a pit on a north facing slope near 10,100' at the base of Baldy in some undisturbed snow. The snow on the way up was very wet, like a warm day in April. There was a lot of free water in the surface snow even where it had been groomed and the untracked snow was full on glop. The pit showed a total snow depth of about 20". The top 10" was all dense wet snow, but closer to the ground were still some large facets and graupel. The weak snow at the bottom of our pit might have been getting a little damp, but there is clearly still weak snow in the 8" or so near the ground.
