I spent some time walking around the Boulger Canyon hills today and thought I’d share some observations. The wind has moved a decent amount of snow throughout the northern half of the compass. Unsheltered faces had noticeable loading that filled old tracks, but where the trees were dense enough to block the recent wind there was great unaffected snow that provided fantastic riding conditions.
The majority of true north faces were thinner than expected with deadfall providing a serious obstacle. I had the intentions of digging a pit but opted for some casual pole probing and quick hand pits. The snowpack seems to have an upper third that is dry light snow, then a thin but strong crust, and the remaining two thirds are faceted trash to the ground. The southern faces hold a little more than a dusting and the sun has burned the snow to the sage. Curious to see how this changes over the upcoming dry spell.
To put things simply it’s good where it’s good and bad everywhere else.
